State Tournament Volunteers

The Tennessee State Science Olympiad tournament would not exist without our dedicated volunteers! Please read below for more information on how to get involved with the Tennessee State Science Olympiad tournament. Fill out the form at the bottom of the page to sign up to become a volunteer. Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers for the Tennessee Science Olympiad state tournament have a wide variety of tasks. Some of the potential tasks include:

  • Being an Event Coordinator
  • Assisting an Event Coordinator
  • Team check-in
  • Assist with food/drink organization
  • Assisting attendees with directions to UTK buildings/rooms
  • Awards ceremony tasks
  • Assisting with the placement of event signage

Pre-College Programs is recruiting Event Supervisors (ES) to serve as judges at the 2024 State Science Olympiad (SO) Tournament scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 2024 at the University of Tennessee. As an ES, you’d coordinate one of the 46 SO events. Depending on the event, ESs will either write and grade an exam or judge experiments and contraptions. This opportunity is best suited for STEM professionals, faculty, staff, and graduate students.

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Writing an event exam
  • Grading an event exam
  • Judging experiments and contraptions
  • Answering coach inquiries
  • Responding to team appeals
  • Breaking ties
  • Applying point deductions (if applicable)

  • Life, Personal & Social Science
  • Earth and Space Science
  • Physical Science & Chemistry
  • Technology & Engineering
  • Inquiry & Nature

Event Descriptions: 

  • Core Knowledge (Written Exam)
  • Build Event
  • Laboratory/ Hands-On
  • Hybrid

Volunteer Training Tool

All volunteers will be required to complete this short 10-15 minute online Volunteer Training prior to your Science Olympiad experience. This training is relevant to both veteran and new volunteers.

Behavior Governing Guidelines

Anyone wishing to volunteer with the Tennessee State Science Olympiad tournament should become familiar with the following rules and policies found online here. These policies include a Code of Ethics and General Rules, Building & Tools Policy, Eye Protection Policy, and Lasers Policy.
